Its campus is located in Arabia, a thriving district some four kilometres from Helsinki city centre. The University occupies stylishly renovated spaces of a large porcelain factory, surrounded by other academic institutions, commercial facilities, new housing and seaside recreational areas.
The School of Design
With approximately 600 degree students and 50 postgraduate students, the School of Design is the largest unit of the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The students of various degree programmes graduate as design professionals capable of working in product design or as designers for industry, commerce, cultural institutions and the media, as well as in expert capacities in design management, as entrepreneurs, or in research. The training provided by the School of Design familiarizes the students with the conceptual apparatus and working methods of the arts, sciences and practices associated with the field of design. The objective is to prepare the students for work in multidisciplinary communities where communication and interpersonal skills are just as important as personal expertise. The Helsinki module of Polis is organised in collaboration with the MA programme in Spatial Design, which is one of the six MA programmes of the School of Design.
