The course module in Helsinki is titled Urban Interventions. The module is project-based. Its aim is to study and test how innovative approaches to planning process and urban design could foster culture-led urban renewal.
Each year, the Polis group focusses on a topical, semi-realistic case. After analysing urban morphology, programmes, economies, cultural and social factors as well as the aims of local actors, students draft a multiple set of future scenarios. The study entails close cooperation with planners, researchers and private sector developers. The resulting scenarios are publicly presented, with the aim of kicking off debates and influencing the plans and development of the case area.

The project work is supported by a lecture series and visits to urban research and planning units in Helsinki. Furthermore, the Helsinki programme involves excursions to Western Finland and St. Petersburg.
