
The Free University of Brussels was founded in 1834 by Theodoor Verhaegen. 'Free' means independent from the state and religious patronage. In 1969 the University gave birth to two independent institutions: the French Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Flemish Vrije Universiteit Brussel. The University community of the VUB now numbers some 12,500 members: 8,500 students, 665 professors and teachers, 500 researchers, 800 staff members and 2,000 doctors and care personnel in the Academic Hospital. The VUB has 8 faculties: Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, Faculty of economic, political and social sciences and Solvay Business School, Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy and Faculty of physical education and
physiotherapy.
